Milano-Cortina 2026/ What is the economic impact of the Winter Olympics?

The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, which officially began a few days ago, are expected to boost the Italian economy, estimated to generate 5.3 billion euros in total value.

A report released by Banca Ifis stated that of the total, 1.1 billion euros is expected to come from spending by tourists and staff during the games. Furthermore, an additional 1.2 billion euros is expected from continued tourism in the next 12 to 18 months.

The remaining €3 billion is attributed to heritage investments, and organizers are expecting around 2.5 million spectators during the Games. Meanwhile, hotels, transport and service providers in Milan, Cortina are reporting increased demand, with real-time booking data showing growth not only in conventional winter resorts, but also in cities such as Verona and Venice.

Visa cardholder flight and accommodation data suggests a 160% increase in overseas arrivals to northern Italy during the main Games period. It is clear that international interest is high with many travellers travelling ahead of at least one event.

Under the new regulations, municipalities within 30 kilometers of Olympic venues are authorized to raise tourism taxes through 2026, with 50% of the revenue going to the central government. In return, tourists will benefit from an improved transportation system and improved public spaces that will continue to serve the region long after the Olympic flame has faded. /CNA
