The US State Department hints that it has lifted the non grata designation for Sali Berisha

In response to a request for comment I sent to the State Department regarding reports that opposition leader Sali Berisha had been removed from persona non grata status, a spokesperson said that the State Department "has issued exemptions to certain designations under (regulation) 7031(c) made by the previous administration because these exemptions are in the interest of an important national interest."

Mr. Berisha himself had hinted during the day that the measure against him had been lifted.

Albania's opposition leader was indicted for corruption in May 2021 by former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

"Today, I am announcing the public designation of Albanian citizen Sali Berisha, former President of Albania, former Prime Minister of Albania, and former member of the Albanian Parliament, as involved in high-level corruption," Mr. Blinken said.

Mr. Berisha has repeatedly insisted that the designation was unfair and politically motivated.
