Albania's Depopulation/ A Demographic Crisis with High Social Costs

Albania is facing a deep demographic crisis where official INSTAT figures for January 1, 2026 witnessed a transformation of the population structure.

At the beginning of this year, the number of residents fell to 2,335,930, marking an annual decline of 1.16%, an indicator that confirms the continuation of a negative trend that has been going on for years.

The main cause of this depopulation remains the negative net migration of 28,531 people, which exceeds the country's natural increase, making emigration the main factor in population decline.

Society is also undergoing an accelerated aging process. The median age has reached 45 years, meaning that half of the population is already over this age. This phenomenon is accompanied by a significant increase in the elderly dependency ratio, which has reached 35.7%.

Previous population projections by age group for the years 2019 - 2031 show a continued decline in the population base, while older age groups are expected to increase significantly.

If in 2019 the 85+ age group numbered 24,189 people, projections show that by 2031 this figure will reach 52,507 people. Meanwhile, the younger age group 0-4 years is expected to fall from 155,622 in 2019 to 148,036 people by 2031.

Despite previous projections, the current reality shows a much faster contraction. If the rates of emigration and aging do not change, the working-age population base will continue to shrink significantly until 2031 and beyond./ CNA
