WHO warning: Food insecurity is killing 1.5 million people every year

More than 860 million people fall ill and 1.5 million die worldwide each year due to unsafe food, the World Health Organization warned today.

In a new report released ahead of World Food Safety Day on June 7, the WHO estimates that millions of people worldwide suffer serious health consequences as a result of contaminated or poorly handled food.

"Food security is not an abstract issue - it affects every meal, every family, every day," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO.

The report estimates that in 2021, foodborne illnesses led to approximately $310 billion in lost productivity due to illness.

Many of these illnesses and deaths, the organization adds, could be prevented through improved water, sanitation and hygiene, food safety practices such as pasteurization, and access to health care for vulnerable populations.

The WHO also warns that climate change is expected to have a major impact on food security. Extreme weather events, rising air and water temperatures, and changing rainfall patterns will increase the risks posed by existing and emerging foodborne diseases. /CNA
