The external debt of Albanian businesses decreases, 1.49 billion in 2025

Businesses reduced their borrowing abroad last year. Bank of Albania data shows that private sector external debt reached 1.49 billion euros at the end of 2025, down 3.3% compared to a year earlier.

Statistics show that the decline in private sector liabilities abroad has mainly resulted from the contraction in the value of the stock of long-term loans from non-resident lenders.

Loans also constitute the largest portion of private companies' liabilities abroad, at around 85% of the total. The remainder consists mainly of debt securities.

Albanian businesses' borrowing abroad has different typologies, ranging from commercial loans, loans secured by development institutions, or the sale of bonds to foreign entities.

Given that Albania is a country with a significant presence of foreign investors, in some cases these companies secure loans from financial institutions in their countries of origin.

Another very important source are the loans that many enterprises benefit from parent companies abroad. This segment of external liabilities is actually even larger, with a total value of 1.63 billion euros.

The value of these liabilities has also decreased compared to a year ago, by 1.3% less.

In total, the external debt of Albanian businesses remains significantly lower compared to loans secured within the country and mainly bank loans.

According to data from the Bank of Albania, at the end of 2025, the business bank loan portfolio was worth 516 billion lek or about 5.3 billion euros.

Domestic borrowing through bond issuance is also gaining a growing share. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF), the portfolio of privately offered bonds, calculated as the issued and outstanding value, reached 39.1 billion lek or almost 404 million euros.

For the most part, these bonds are financed by private investors within the country. In the past year alone, the value of the bond portfolio has increased by 38%./ Monitor
