Foreigners spent more than 1 billion euros in Albania in the first quarter

The first three months of this year have brought a record level of income from foreign citizens who have traveled to Albania.

On the other hand, the spending of Albanians abroad has also reached unprecedented figures.

Bank of Albania balance of payments data show that in the first quarter of 2026, spending by foreigners traveling to Albania totaled 1 billion 4 million euros. This is the highest figure ever recorded since the 1990s and reflects Albania's return to being a popular tourist destination this year. Foreigners' spending on travel increased by 14.8% compared to the same period a year earlier.

Other INSTAT data revealed that in the first three months of the year, 1.67 million foreign citizens entered the country, with a minimal increase of 3.2% compared to the same period a year earlier. The weak performance was influenced by the first two months of the year, where in January they fell by 1.5% and in February they increased by only 0.03%, also affected by unfavorable weather. In March, tourism began to revive, with arrivals increasing by 10.8%.

Although foreigners have increased their spending in Albania, the same has happened to Albanian citizens traveling abroad. However, more money has remained in the country. According to the Bank of Albania, the travel balance, which measures the difference between the spending of foreigners in Albania and Albanians abroad, was 363 million euros in the first quarter of the year.
