US appeals court clears way for deportation of migrants from 3 countries

A U.S. appeals court has cleared the way for the deportation of migrants from Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua who had previously received temporary protected status (TPS), a status that allowed them to live in the U.S.

This status, TPS, created in 1990, protects migrants from deportation to countries deemed at risk from natural disasters, armed conflicts or other crises.

The US government of President Donald Trump intends to eliminate most of these temporary protection programs, with the aim of deporting hundreds of thousands of migrants, according to the court ruling.

A federal judge had previously suspended a government decision affecting migrants from Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua, but now an appeals court has overturned that decision and moved forward with the deportations.

Special TPS status was granted to more than 51,000 migrants from Honduras and about 3,000 from Nicaragua, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. In addition, about 7,000 Nepalese citizens living in the US benefit from TPS after the 2015 earthquake. /CNA
