18 dead from freezing cold in New York City

Eighteen people have died in New York City from an extended period of freezing cold.

Since late January, the city has experienced a prolonged cold snap, with temperatures at or below 0°C for more than two weeks in a row. This is one of the longest periods of sub-zero temperatures New York has seen in the past 60 years.

Mayor Zoran Mamdani said that every life lost is a tragedy.

Although temperatures are expected to rise this week, they remain below the seasonal average, with Mamdani urging residents to stay safe, stay home and continue to look after each other.
