Ukraine says Russian strikes near Kharkiv kill four people, including children

Russian air strikes overnight have killed at least four people, including three young children, in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, local officials said. Regional head Oleh Synegubov said two boys, both two years old, a one-year-old girl and a 34-year-old man died after a drone hit their home in the town of Bohodukhiv.

A 35-year-old pregnant woman and another woman, 73, were injured in the attack on the city, Synegubov said.

The Russian airstrike comes as Moscow renews attacks after a week-long pause that Donald Trump had asked Vladimir Putin to observe, as a bitter cold snap swept across Ukraine. Bohodukhiv, northwest of Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, has been under near-daily Russian attacks in recent days.

On Monday, a 41-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy were killed in the city, Synegubov said. Russian forces also dropped seven bombs on the city of Sloviansk on Tuesday, Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said on Telegram. Three people, including an 11-year-old girl, were killed.

Moscow has increased pressure in the area by targeting transport and energy infrastructure with a record number of ballistic missiles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency due to the energy situation in the Kharkiv region.

This comes after a so-called "energy truce", which was intended to allow Ukraine's energy sector a break during temperatures of -20°C (-4°F), expired last week.

Tens of thousands of people across Ukraine are experiencing severe power outages and many families have no running water or heating. Zelensky has said the US wants the war with Russia to end by June and that both sides have been invited to the US for talks next week.

Meanwhile, a massive Ukrainian drone strike in Volzhsky, in Russia's Volgograd region, was reported on Wednesday evening. Regional governor Andrei Bocharov said an apartment was damaged in the attack and a fire broke out at a factory./ CNA, translated by BBC
