The "autumn" of Albanian politics

by Iris BEQIRI

September has started full of developments for the country's politics and continues to be extremely intense, as new decisions, decrees, agendas and various institutional procedures are announced every day. This month not only coincides with the start of a new political year, but also of a restart, both for the activity of the parliament and for the political forces. Above all, autumn is a period of re-testing for politics, to clarify focus and ideas, but also to return to mistakes that should not be repeated.

In the last three decades, several elements have emerged in Albanian politics that have persistently become part of a normality, sometimes meaningless and sometimes unjustifiable, first of all in terms of the results they have brought to society.

The repeated mistakes of Albanian politics, which have left it in the dustbin and are tested every year, are the same issues that every citizen can identify with, the same problems that are discussed from north to south and the same concerns that are shared by people at home, work and community. Nothing more than that and just that simple! This is because politics has a wide and tangible impact on everyone. Summarized and from a general perspective, they can be divided into three categories.

First, the pronounced lack of transparency. As an important feature of politics and a democracy, transparency ensures decision-making based on rules and procedures, which are not violated for any reason and personal interest. Transparency is an essential tool for holding public officials accountable and combating corruption.

Secondly, public trust is declining. The first for a particular party or individual is caused by ideology, scandals, accusations, certain public positions on weighty issues and more. It seems that citizens have a hard time showing trust, which should not be enjoyed by politicians who take it as a sign of more power because all this is a vicious circle.

Thirdly and most importantly, the type of public policies undertaken over the years, sometimes non-specific, sometimes with implementation problems, is an indication that more attention is needed in many areas and directions, to obtain the intended effects, away from attempts to overcome challenges through methods that only have an effect in the short term.

In this period, which happens to be the start of a new legislature for Albania, it is more necessary than ever that what has gone wrong be turned into a lesson for the country's politics.

There is no more time for political mistakes. It is time for clear goals, a complete program, good organization, political cooperation for the benefit of the country, beyond intrigues.

It is time to do real politics for Albanians and the future of Albania.
