Classified documents case/ Former Trump adviser expected to plead guilty

John Bolton, the former national security adviser to US President Donald Trump who turned critic of him, has reached a plea deal to plead guilty in the case of classified federal documents, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Federal prosecutors indicted Bolton last year on 18 charges related to improper handling of classified materials.

The BBC reports that he will plead guilty to one count of withholding national defense information and pay a fine of $2.25 million. Bolton is expected to enter his plea at a retrial hearing on June 26.

The plea agreement does not recommend a prison sentence, but it is up to a judge at a separate hearing to decide on the sentence.

The Justice Department filed charges against Bolton last October, accusing him of endangering the public by allegedly misusing classified documents, some of which were marked top secret, during and after his tenure as Trump's national security adviser between April 2018 and September 2019.

The indictment against Bolton came on the heels of other high-profile criminal cases filed against Trump critics, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Bolton has spoken critically of Trump since leaving his first administration and wrote a book containing criticism of the president. /CNA
