Why does the opposition oppose the local elections?

The decree of the President of the Republic for elections in 6 municipalities is the hottest political debate of the day.

Lawyers are divided, between those who think the decree is unconstitutional, since the Constitutional Court accepted Mr. Veliaj's appeal and the elections should have been suspended. And, between those who think it is fair, since the appeal should have been made to the Administrative Court.

Undoubtedly, this conflict deserves to be addressed not in television debates, but in expert debates to close the paths that the law leaves open for interpretation.

But what is impressive is the opposition's great zeal to oppose the decree.

And here I don't believe there is any attempt to defend Mr. Veliaj, nor to defend the Constitution, since the assessment she has of the Rama-Begaj duo is known. But it seems that the opposition was expecting the postponement of the elections since it is not ready.

There is still no political agreement among the opposition parties to unite the opposition vote under a single point. There is no name that can serve as a unifier of the opposition rainbow.

The process may have a thousand problems, but the opposition here should have been ready. It protested for about 2 years demanding the removal, resignation, and arrest of the mayor of Tirana. Then, when he was arrested, it demanded his official and public dismissal, and the holding of elections. And, when the elections are already ahead, it demands their postponement.

Undoubtedly, the opposition is politically traumatized. 16 years in opposition, an absolute and aggressive majority. Supporters who leave due to need, temptation, pessimism... But, winning the race in a municipality where, starting with the mayor, many former leaders are in prison, should not be a difficult task.

In society, it's not that there are no opposition votes, but a strong magnet is needed to collect them, like metal particles. And this magnet is leadership./ CNA
