Harvard University faculty voted to approve a limit on the number of 'A' grades in each course, part of the college's multi-year effort to tighten grading.
The faculty argued that limiting "A" grades would encourage students to study harder and that it protects the value of degrees while preserving Harvard's reputation.
About 70 percent of the faculty voted in favor of placing a cap on "A" grades, said Joshua Green, a member of the committee that proposed the new grading policy.
"This decision is an important step in ensuring that the grading system better serves its primary purposes: to recognize true distinction and support the College's academic mission," said Dean Amanda Claybaugh.
Harvard has sought for years to address overly lenient grading, considering similar efforts at Princeton and Wellesley.
