Nobel Prize-winning physicist warns: Nothing will survive after 2060

The end of humanity appears to be very close and with a clear time horizon, according to Nobel Prize-winning physicist David Gross.

Gross was credited with discovering asymptotic freedom in strong interaction theory 22 years ago, along with Frank Wilczek and Hugh David Politzer.

Speaking to Live Science, the acclaimed physicist referred to how likely a nuclear catastrophe is now, but also to the threat of artificial intelligence. Characteristically, he argues that no humans will have survived after 2060.

"Even after the end of the Cold War, when they had conditions for strategic arms control, all of which are now gone, there were estimates that put the probability of a nuclear accident at 1% each year," the scientist explained.

The 85-year-old physicist highlighted the fact that no nuclear agreement has been signed in the last decade.

 "There are now nine nuclear powers. Even if there were three, it would be more complicated than two," Gross said./ CNA
