Wild animals are adapting to city life, but at a cost

Scientists in Panama have launched a series of experiments to reintroduce the Panamanian golden frog, a critically endangered species and the country's national symbol, into the wild.
At a conservation center in Gamboa, researchers from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and other partners have released about 100 frogs under controlled conditions to test their ability to survive in the wild.
However, the results remain worrying: around 70% of them have died as a result of a dangerous fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis, which continues to threaten wild populations.
Scientists say the data collected from these trials will help better understand the disease and prepare for larger releases in the future to restore the species to natural habitats.
According to the researchers, one of the main challenges is feeding the frogs in the laboratory, as their food must be produced entirely within the research center.
The project is considered an important step in global efforts to stop the extinction of one of Central America's most iconic species.
