Lake Natron, which turns animals to stone

Lake Natron, which turns animals to stone

In northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya, lies Lake Natron, one of the most unusual lakes in the world, known for the eerie sight of animals that appear to have been turned to stone. But, according to experts, this is not a natural “magic.” The animals do not turn to stone, but are mummified.

The phenomenon is related to the chemical composition of the water, which contains very high amounts of the mineral natron, a mixture of alkaline salts. Due to high temperatures and the lack of natural water outlets, the concentration of these minerals is constantly increasing.

As a result, the lake's pH reaches very high levels (up to 12), similar to household bleach.
When animals die and fall into the water, the sodium bicarbonate absorbs moisture and fat from their bodies, drying them out and preserving them in a state that makes them look like statues.

However, not all living things are endangered. Some species, such as flamingos and tilapia fish, have adapted to live in these extreme conditions.
Experts emphasize that for humans, contact with the water is not necessarily fatal, but it can cause serious skin burns. / CNA
