D915 in Turkey, the mountain road that challenges every driver

The D915 mountain road, which connects the cities of Of and Bayburt in eastern Turkey, is considered by many experts and adventurers to be one of the most dangerous roads in the world.

At around 105 kilometers long, this road traverses rugged mountainous terrain and offers an extreme challenge even for the most experienced drivers. For years, the title of most dangerous road was held by the Yungas Road in Bolivia, known as the “Road of Death,” but many travelers believe that the D915 surpasses it in terms of difficulty and danger.

The history of this road dates back to the Trebizond Campaign (1916–1918), when it was built by Russian soldiers with simple tools. Even today, a large part of it remains unpaved, covered with gravel and without modern safety standards.

What makes the D915 so dangerous is the extreme terrain conditions. The road contains 38 hairpin bends, while the most famous section, known as the Dereba?? bends, has 17 bends in just 5.1 kilometers. These bends are located at an altitude of 1,712 to over 2,000 meters above sea level and have gradients of up to 17%.

The lack of protective barriers is another major risk factor. In many parts, the road is so narrow that two vehicles cannot pass at the same time, forcing one of them to make dangerous reverse maneuvers near deep ravines.

Weather conditions further worsen the situation. Dense fog, rain, and slippery terrain are common, while during the winter the road is closed for months due to snow and ice.

However, despite the dangers, the D915 continues to be used daily by local residents, who prefer it as a shorter connecting route, braving one of the most daunting routes in the world every day. /CNA
