Studies: Emperor penguins face a growing threat from melting ice

Emperor penguins in Antarctica are facing a growing threat as sea ice retreats and melts due to climate change.

Recent studies by British scientists show that penguins are being forced to form smaller and more overcrowded colonies, a situation that could have serious consequences for their survival.

Emperor penguins depend on protected, stable sea ice to carry out key life processes such as molting and raising young. If the ice melts prematurely, they lose their natural protection and can die from low temperatures or lack of food.

Satellite research shows that sea ice levels are at record lows, endangering places where penguins gather to complete the molting process, a stage when they are unable to go to sea to feed. /CNA
