Wild animals are adapting to city life, but at a cost

Scientists have found that wild animals around the world are adapting to urban life in surprising ways. From monkeys in New Delhi stealing food from people, to squirrels in New York and birds in Sydney feeding on garbage, many species are becoming bolder and less afraid of humans.

According to studies, urban animals are developing similar behaviors among themselves, a phenomenon known as “behavioral homogenization.” Cities create similar conditions such as noise, lighting, and high human presence, favoring the smartest and most adaptable individuals.

For example, birds in cities sing louder and at higher frequencies to overcome the noise of traffic. Meanwhile, some species learn to use new food sources, such as garbage cans, and even open them.

However, this adaptation has consequences. Animals are losing some of the skills needed to survive in the wild, and their behavioral and genetic diversity is decreasing. This makes them more vulnerable to future changes and makes it difficult for them to return to their natural habitats.

Experts also warn of increased conflicts between humans and animals, such as accidents, property damage and the spread of diseases.

The study highlights the importance of understanding these changes to protect wildlife and plan more sustainable cities in the future./ CNA
