UNESCO study: After years of progress, girls are falling behind again in math

According to a Unesco study published this Thursday, the number of countries where boys outperform girls in math performance reached a record high in three decades in 2023. After years of progress, girls are falling behind again in math,

UNESCO warns that this trend is worrying and believes that good performance in mathematics is important for boosting economic and social development, promoting innovation and finding solutions to urgent global problems.

The analysis, prepared jointly with the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), is based on data from the TIMSS survey, the international assessment of student performance in Mathematics and Science, for the period 1995-2023 in 47 countries and territorial entities at the end of primary education and in 38 countries at the lower secondary education cycle, including Spain, China, Australia, the USA, etc.

In 2023, boys performed better than girls at the end of primary education in 81% of the countries studied, compared with 52% in 2019, 39% in 2015, 41% in 2011 and 26% in 2003. Inequalities are also reflected in the distribution of skill levels.

In 2023, 21% of countries had a higher percentage of girls not achieving the international minimum threshold in mathematics at the end of primary school, compared to 4% in 2019 and 2% in 2015. /CNA
