Germans claim to have the best bread in the world

Bread is an important part of everyday life in Germany. With over 3,000 registered varieties, Germans make no secret of their belief that they have the richest baking culture in the world.

In everyday German life, bread is not just a food, it is a concept. The word itself is used almost synonymously with a meal: “Pausenbrot” is bread for a snack, “Abendbrot” is for an evening meal, while in Bavaria “Brotzeit” is for an entire ritual.

The variety is impressive; from dark pumpernickel bread to multi-grain Dreikornbrot and pumpkin seed Kürbiskernbrot.

The belief that German bread is superior does not always go unnoticed. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statements about the quality of bread in other countries have caused reactions, showing that the issue also touches on cultural sensitivities.

An industry under pressure despite its deep tradition, the German bakery industry is facing serious challenges, according to a report in The Economist. The number of bakeries has fallen sharply, by almost 60% since 1998, to fewer than 9,000.

At the same time, consumer habits are changing. Supermarkets are gaining ground and the most popular product is no longer fresh bread from the oven, but pre-sliced ??bread./ CNA
