Study: 'Extinct' volcanoes may be hiding magma for future eruptions

A new study from ETH Zurich suggests that volcanoes long considered "extinct" may still be active at depth, accumulating magma that could lead to future eruptions.

The team of volcanologists analyzed the geological history of the Methana Volcano in Greece over a period of about 700,000 years. The results show that even during very long periods of quiet – over 100,000 years – magma can continue to form beneath the surface.

According to lead researcher Olivier Bachmann, volcanoes can "breathe" for millennia without showing signs on the surface. This means that the absence of eruptions is not always an indicator of safety.

The study focused on analyzing more than 1,250 zircon crystals, which function as natural "time capsules," helping scientists reconstruct the volcano's internal activity with high precision.

Methana is part of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, an active area that also includes the Thera Volcano, linked to the destruction of the Minoan civilization around 3,600 years ago.

Another author of the study, R?zvan-Gabriel Popa, pointed out that many volcanoes in subduction zones may be periodically supplied with water-rich magma, influencing their behavior and the frequency of eruptions.

The findings challenge the traditional assumption that volcanoes become harmless after about 10,000 years of inactivity and suggest the need for more careful monitoring of them.

Researchers recommend that authorities monitor indicators such as gas emissions, ground deformations and seismic activity to identify volcanoes that may be silently "waking up."/ CNA
