Glacier blocks route to Everest, delays climbing season

A large and unstable mass of ice has blocked the main route to Mount Everest, causing delays in the start of the climbing season in Nepal.

According to teams known as the "icefall doctors," a serac about 30 meters high is blocking the passage of expeditions just below Camp 1. They say that there is currently no safe way to bypass it and that the only solution is to wait for the ice to melt naturally.

The delay has pushed work to open the road at a critical point in the spring season, when weather conditions are usually more favorable for climbing. This situation has raised concerns about crowding and "traffic" at high altitudes.

Sherpa teams, who are responsible for setting ropes and securing the route, are working in difficult conditions and say emergency alternatives are also being considered, including the use of helicopters to transport equipment to Camp 2.

The Everest climbing season is expected to be busy this year, as hundreds of climbers have received permits to attempt the world's highest peak, while the remaining time of favorable weather is limited until the end of May./ CNA
