Scientists discover surprising link between voting and longevity

A new study suggests that participating in elections may have a positive impact on health and longevity, especially among the elderly.

The research, based on data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, analyzed individuals over 65 years old and compared the life expectancy of those who voted with those who did not participate in the elections.

The results showed that voters were 45% less likely to die within five years of the 2008 presidential election, 37% less likely after 10 years, and 29% less likely after 15 years.

The researchers used verified data from Catalist and the National Death Index registries to ensure the accuracy of the analysis.

Even after taking into account other factors such as gender, income, marital status and initial health status, the association between voting and lower mortality risk remained strong.

According to the researchers, the method of voting, in person or by mail, did not affect the result, nor did whether the preferred candidate won or lost.

Experts suggest that voting may have similar effects to other civic engagement activities, such as volunteering, which are known to improve well-being and may extend life. This may be linked to reduced stress, strengthened social ties, and a sense of community involvement.

Although the exact mechanisms are not yet fully clear, the study highlights that even a simple act like voting can be beneficial for health, alongside other well-known habits such as healthy eating and physical activity./ CNA
