NASA telescope discovers massive star clusters inside galaxies

Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope along with the Hubble Space Telescope have made new discoveries about how star clusters form and evolve within galaxies.

By studying thousands of young star clusters in four nearby galaxies, researchers found that massive star clusters emerge more quickly from the gas clouds in which they are born, NASA reported.

The findings offer scientists a deeper understanding of how stars form, how galaxies evolve, and how conditions for planet formation can be influenced. 

Astronomers have long studied this process because it helps explain how galaxies change over time. As the gas surrounding a star cluster disappears, the light from those stars can affect other nearby regions where stars are forming. This process is known as stellar feedback.

The researchers explained that most of the gas inside galaxies is never used to form stars because of this reaction process. While nearby star-forming regions within the Milky Way and neighboring dwarf galaxies can be studied in detail, the scientists said that observing nearby galaxies allows them to examine thousands of star clusters in various stages of development. The development of infrared astronomy has allowed scientists to see through dense clouds of gas and study the earliest stages of star formation.
