Gold has been one of the world's most precious metals for centuries, not only for its economic value but also for its remarkable ability to resist rust or corrosion. Now, scientists say they have discovered the atomic reason behind this unique property.
Two computational chemists from Tulane University in the US, Santu Biswas and Matthew M. Montemore, have published a study that explains why gold is so resistant to oxidation. According to them, the secret lies in the way the atoms on the metal's surface are arranged.
Researchers discovered that the atoms on the surface of gold form a highly packed hexagonal structure, which does not allow oxygen molecules to easily break apart and cause rust or corrosion. This is why gold retains its luster even after thousands of years.
However, research has shown that when this structure becomes looser, gold can react more easily with oxygen. This is especially true for gold nanoparticles, which are much more chemically active than bulk gold.
Using computer simulations, the researchers analyzed how oxygen molecules interacted with different gold surfaces. They found that on the loosest surfaces, oxygen was released billions to trillions of times more easily than on traditionally compacted surfaces.
This discovery could have major implications for the chemical industry and catalyst technology. Scientists believe that controlling the atomic structure of gold could help create more efficient catalysts for industrial reactions, while maintaining corrosion resistance.
According to the study authors, the results offer a new strategy for designing gold-based materials that can be used in advanced chemical and technological processes./ CNA
