Today continues the second day of the trial against former President Donald Trump in New York, on charges of fraud with his properties and businesses, artificially increasing their value. The trial, a trial under the civil code, is being held without a jury and it will be up to the judge to decide whether the president is guilty or not, but the proceedings could deal a major blow to his real estate empire.
Mr. Trump, the leader in the Republican party race for president, is accused of inflating the value of his assets by billions of dollars, to secure more favorable terms for loans from banks and to benefit from insurance.
A year before the presidential elections, the former president is using his appearances in court as an electoral campaign.
Former President Trump was not bound and had no role in the formal proceedings of the trial.
But he nevertheless seized the opportunity to create a media spectacle that thrust him back into the spotlight, portraying himself to his supporters as the victim of a politicized justice system — an attitude that is helping his efforts to received the candidacy of the Republican Party for next year's presidential elections.
It was all similar to Mr. Trump's previous appearances in various courts and a local jail in four other indictments filed against him in four different jurisdictions.
Journalists waited in line the night before to secure a seat in the courtroom; media helicopters followed his car in a motorcade from Trump Tower to the Manhattan courthouse. Cable networks covered the spectacle live.
However, he complained about his voluntary appearance in court.
"It is political. It was very successful for them because they took me out of the campaign. I should be sitting in a court all day, instead of being in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or other places. It is election interference. They're meddling in the 2024 presidential election. I'd like to campaign instead," Mr. Trump said.
Mr. Trump spent the rest of the day sitting at the defense table observing the proceedings.
