Kosovo files war crimes indictment against former Serbian Interior Ministry

Prosecutors in Kosovo on Tuesday filed an indictment against a former member of Serbia's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) on suspicion of participating in the murder, torture and looting of Albanian civilians during the 1998-99 war in Kosovo.

The Kosovo Special Prosecution identified the defendant only by the initials RD, who was arrested in September last year and has been held in custody since then.

He is accused of murdering a person with the initials SH.D. on May 22, 1999 in Vushtrri, a city in northeastern Kosovo.

In another count of the indictment, RD is suspected of having, as a member of the MUP, in complicity with other members of the Serbian forces, participated in the murder of 71 civilians, in inhumane treatment, torture, looting and expulsion of the Albanian civilian population.

Recently, Kosovo authorities have increased the number of indictments and arrests of people suspected of war crimes during the country's recent war.

The indictment against the former MUP member comes a week after the court in Pristina sentenced Ekrem Bajrovi? to 12 years in prison, in his retrial for war crimes against the civilian population in the villages of Istog in 1999.

During the war in Kosovo, more than 13,000 civilians – mostly Albanians – were killed, while thousands more went missing.

More than 1,500 people are still missing, most of them Albanians.

Initially after the war, from 2000 and 2008 respectively, war crimes in Kosovo were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), and from 2008, by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).

In 2018, EULEX handed over the cases to local justice authorities. /REL
