"Greenland" issue/ Trump: It should be controlled by the US, but it

United States President Donald Trump reiterated on Tuesday that he wants the US to take control of Greenland, arguing that the territory has strategic importance to American national security.

During a bilateral meeting ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said such a move could negatively affect his relationship with the alliance.

"This would damage my relationship with NATO," he said.

Trump also criticized Denmark, saying it has not invested enough in Greenland and that the island is becoming increasingly important due to the growing presence of China and Russia in the Arctic region.

"Greenland does not bring much benefit to Denmark, and Copenhagen does not spend enough on its development. However, it is a very important part of the United States," the American president declared.

In conclusion, Trump emphasized that "Greenland should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark."

Trump has previously refused to rule out the possibility of using military force to take control of Greenland.

However, earlier this year, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, he expressed his preference for a long-term agreement on the issue.

Despite this, officials in his administration have continued to leave open the possibility of tougher measures, arguing that Greenland is essential to US strategic interests and national security. /CNA
