Shocking evidence from secret prisons/ Investigation exposes Russian-backed

An in-depth investigation by BBC Eye Investigations has shed light on a shadowy and secretive prison system operated by Russian-backed forces in the occupied territories of Ukraine, where torture and sexual violence are described as widespread and systematic.

Through testimonies from survivors, such as the case of 64-year-old Liudmyla Huseinova, and analysis of open sources, the investigation has identified three individuals accused of serious abuses of detainees: Yurii Temerbek, Ruslan Yeriomichev known as "Yermak", and Andrey Spivak.

According to evidence, these individuals, some of whom were previously part of the Ukrainian police, now live freely in Russia or in occupied territories, leading normal family lives while being accused of war crimes.

In detention centers, such as the infamous "Izolyatsia" or other makeshift facilities, detainees have reported brutal beatings, electric shocks, mock executions, and sexual violence, while family members are often given no information about the fate of their relatives.

The investigation highlights that despite investigations launched by Ukrainian prosecutors and extensive evidence collected by international organizations such as the UN, bringing the perpetrators to justice remains extremely difficult. The vast majority of the accused have not been caught, while sentences handed down by Ukrainian courts are largely absent.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations and survivors continue to demand justice, considering the documentation and publication of the identities of these persons as an essential step to holding them accountable for the suffering caused./ CNA
