Russian forces target Kherson with heavy shelling

Russian forces launched heavy shelling in Kherson early Monday, in the latest offensive against the southern Ukrainian city, CNN reports.

Ukrainian officials say eight people were injured in the Russian shelling, one of whom later died.

Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the military administration of the Kherson region, said on Telegram: "Today in Kherson 8 people were injured. Among them are two children, sisters aged 12 and 13 and their mother."

"In another part of the city this morning, 3 men were injured, one of them is in serious condition. Two policemen were also injured."

One of the police officers has since died, Prokudin said.

The city and surrounding settlements came under increased fire from Moscow troops over the weekend. On Sunday, at least three people were injured by shelling in the region.

Russian forces launched 16 aerial bombs aimed at the Kherson region in recent days, according to a spokeswoman for Ukraine's Southern Operational Command. The Russian military targeted residential and agricultural infrastructure, Nataliya Humenyuk said./ CNA
