Is the US considering excluding Spain from the military alliance? / NATO reacts

NATO has said in a statement that the treaty does not provide for the suspension of members, while tensions over war in Iran increase within the Western bloc.

The alliance has said there is no legal provision for the suspension or expulsion of member states. The reaction comes after reports that the United States is considering punitive measures against Spain for its stance against the war in Iran.

A Pentagon official, quoted by Reuters, said an internal email suggested reviewing relations with allies that have not supported the US military campaign. The main point of conflict remains Spain's refusal to allow the use of air bases on its territory for attacks on Iran.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez dismissed the reports, saying his country only works with official documents and not leaked emails, stressing that Spain cooperates within the framework of international law. On the other hand, the UK, through Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has taken a moderate stance, allowing the use of the bases but rejecting wider involvement in the conflict.

While the Pentagon confirms that it is preparing "credible options" for President Trump for allies to do their part, European countries such as Germany and Italy have come to Spain's defense.

According to the leaked document, in addition to Spain, the US is also considering withdrawing support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands as a form of diplomatic pressure. However, NATO officials reiterate that Spain's membership is not in question, as alliance regulations do not allow such an act of expulsion. /CNA
