Kosovo's Membership in the Peace Board/ MPs Ratify the Agreement

The deputies of the Kosovo Assembly have ratified the international agreement for Kosovo's membership in the Peace Board, an initiative of US President Donald Trump, for the resolution of conflicts in the world.

103 MPs voted for the agreement, none against and no abstentions.

Haxhi Avdyli from the Vetevendosje Movement parliamentary group said that Kosovo's membership in the Peace Board is a step of strategic importance for the country.

"Membership is an important political and strategic decision that positions our country as an active contributor to building global peace and international security," he said.

Even opposition parties said that Kosovo's membership in this board is in the country's interest.

"Membership is of high state interest, strengthens international security, Kosovo's Euro-Atlantic orientation and consolidates the alliance with the US," said opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo MP Elmi Reçica.

According to the Democratic League of Kosovo MP, Anton Quni, Kosovo is becoming an exporter of stability, adding that this is an opportunity for the country to shape its image in the world.

"We are not simply voting for membership, we are voting for the dignity of our state, for the realization of our sacred friendships ," he said.

Meanwhile, Time Kadrijaj from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo said that membership in President Trump's initiative is proof that the country is guaranteeing security and strengthening friendship with the US.

"This membership itself and today's vote is a guarantee for Kosovo," she said.

What is the Peace Board?

On January 22, the Peace Board was established during a ceremony held in Davos, Switzerland.

The board was launched by US President Donald Trump as a new body for resolving international conflicts.

Former Kosovo resident Vjosa Osmani was among the founders of the Peace Board and has fully supported Trump's initiative.

This new body was initially focused on implementing the agreement to end the Israel-Gaza war, as approved last November by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803.

But the Board's Charter does not limit its role to Gaza.

The board will be led by Trump, while he will also have an Executive Board whose members include: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, the US president's son-in-law Jared Kushner, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, billionaire Mark Rowan, American businessman Ajay Banga and US National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel. Meanwhile, Bulgarian politician Nickolay Mladenov will be the representative of the Gaza Peace Board.

Meanwhile, the International Stabilization Force has also been created as a mechanism of the Peace Board, through which Kosovo will send members of the Kosovo Security Force to Gaza, with the aim of providing security and supervising the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Parliament approves sending KSF to Gaza

This Gaza force is part of Trump's 20-point plan to achieve peace in Gaza.

The plan was accepted in October last year by Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union.

The war in Gaza began in October 2023, following Hamas' attack on Israel, which killed over 1,200 people in Israel and took hundreds of hostages.

Israeli retaliatory attacks on Gaza caused thousands of deaths, a famine, and extensive infrastructural damage.

The Kosovo Assembly approved the deployment of troops, and then the acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, authorized the deployment of the KSF to Gaza. /REL
