"Theft of the Century" with $1 Billion/ Moldovan Oligarch Sentenced to

Vlad Plahotniuc, once Moldova's richest man, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison in a bank fraud case known as the "theft of the century".

Plahotniuc was found guilty of participating in the 2014-2015 fraud, involving $1 billion, at the time 12% of Moldova's total GDP.

He was personally accused of taking over $40 million from the fraud scheme and was ordered to pay around $60 million (£44 million) to the state in restitution.

Plahotniuc, who denies any wrongdoing, was not present in court. His lawyer said he would appeal.

The prosecutor's office argued that there was evidence that Plahotniuc used funds withdrawn from banks for personal gain, for the purchase of an Embraer Legacy 650 aircraft, the purchase of property, payment for legal, medical and tourist services, as well as business investments. /CNA
