The Greek Parliament voted today to lift the immunity of 13 MPs whose names appear in two files of the European Public Prosecutor's Office on the issue of abuse of EU funds for agriculture.

According to Greek media, 288 MPs participated in the vote to lift immunity, paving the way for an investigation of the MPs in question.

Meanwhile, it is reported that at least 10 of the 13 MPs mentioned voted in favor of lifting their immunity and also that of the rest.

During the discussion that preceded it, all those involved asked MPs of all parties to vote in favor of lifting their immunity, expressing that they want to claim their innocence in court despite the fact that the conclusions, as they claimed, of the European Public Prosecutor's Office are false.

"Nowhere in the case file is there a recorded conversation by me or my associates. The evidence is so strong ," said MP Costas Karamanlis.

"The MP is the first advocate of the citizens and seeks solutions to problems in a clearly legal manner. We are not allowed to live in a bubble. Unfortunately, politicians have a presumption of guilt and not innocence. I have faith in the institution of justice and in the institution of the European Public Prosecutor's Office," said MP Notis Mitarakis.

The scandal concerns alleged fraud in payments by the now-defunct state agricultural subsidy agency OPEKEPE, which handled European Union funds. /CNA
