Last stop of the African tour/ Pope Leo XIV visits Equatorial Guinea

Pope Leo XIV arrived in Equatorial Guinea today, the last stop of his tour of Africa.

The Pope disembarked from the plane and walked on a red carpet alongside the president, while hundreds of believers, many of whom wore T-shirts with the Pope's image, sang religious songs and were accompanied by musical bands. 

The visit comes as part of the Pope's important cause, where his increasingly vocal defenses of human rights are being closely followed in one of the most closed countries on the continent.

The Central African country has been ruled since 1979 by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who at 83 is the world's longest-serving non-monarchical head of state. 

Throughout his tour of Africa, which began on April 13, the Pope has criticized tyranny and exploitation while promoting peace and social justice, replacing his previously reserved style with a harsher tone. /CNA
