Drug raid in Mexico/ 2 CIA officers killed in car accident

Two U.S. embassy officials who were killed in a car crash in northern Mexico were working for the CIA as part of the agency's expanded role in combating drug trafficking in the Western Hemisphere, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The accident occurred in the state of Chihuahua and also killed two other Mexican officials.

The country's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said she would investigate whether the raid violated the country's national security laws.

The four were returning from a meeting with Mexican officials as part of an operation to dismantle a drug lab in a remote area.

Chihuahua Attorney General Cesar Jauregui Moreno said the Americans were not directly involved in the operation against the lab, which he described as possibly one of the largest ever uncovered. According to Mexican authorities, the vehicle left the lane, fell into a creek and exploded./ CNA
