Iran undecided about participating in talks in Islamabad

Iran has not yet decided whether to participate in peace talks with the United States in Islamabad, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on April 21, after US forces seized a large oil tanker that was sailing at sea.

Baqaei called this action, as well as the earlier seizure of a cargo ship, "piracy at sea and state terrorism," saying it raises doubts about Washington's seriousness regarding negotiations to end the war that the US, together with Israel, launched against Iran on February 28.

On April 7, the US and Iran, with the mediation of Pakistan, reached a two-week ceasefire agreement, which expires on April 22.

US Vice President JD Vance, who is expected to lead the US delegation to the talks in Islamabad, has not yet left for the Pakistani capital.

In the first round of talks, held on April 11-12, the US and Iran failed to reach an agreement that would end the war.

Iran has blocked access to the Strait of Hormuz, which controls entry to the Persian Gulf, to all ships except Iranian ones or those approved by Tehran for passage. Meanwhile, the US has a blockade in place of Iranian ports.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to resume military action and attack Iranian civilian infrastructure, such as bridges and power plants, if Tehran does not accept his terms.

He also said that he does not want to extend the ceasefire, while regarding the American blockade of Iranian ports, he said that it will not be lifted without a peace agreement being signed.

Pakistan, which is mediating talks between the parties, has called on Washington and Tehran to extend the ceasefire./ Rel
