Drafting of the EU accession treaty/ Costa and Kos congratulate Montenegro

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has congratulated Montenegro on the latest step on its path towards the European Union. In a public reaction, Costa described the decision to establish the working group on the accession agreement as a key moment for the enlargement process.

"Congratulations to Montenegro, we have taken a big step towards your membership in the European Union. The decision to establish the Working Group for the drafting of the new Membership Agreement is a key moment. For the first time since 2014, the EU starts counting down the clock for the next enlargement," Costa said.

The European Union's Enlargement Commissioner, Marta Kos, also stated in a post on the social network "X" that Montenegro is very close to membership in the European Union. Kos states that the start of drafting the Treaty of Accession of Montenegro to the EU is a recognition of progress and an encouragement to accelerate reforms.

“Montenegro’s place within the EU is now taking shape. Today, Member States decided to start drafting the Treaty of Accession of Montenegro to the EU. This is a major step on the path to EU membership, a clear recognition of Montenegro’s progress and an encouragement to accelerate reforms. It also offers a chance to learn from past enlargements and to include new and stronger safeguards in future accession treaties to prevent a backsliding on the rule of law and fundamental values,” she wrote.

His reaction comes after the decision of EU member states' ambassadors to approve the establishment of a working group that will prepare Montenegro's accession treaty. This step is seen as an important development that brings Podgorica even closer to full membership in the European Union. /CNA
