Moscow court extends detention of opposition politician accused of discrediting military

Reuters-A Moscow court extended the detention of Maxim Kruglov, deputy chairman of the Russian liberal Yabloko party, his lawyer Natalya Tikhonova said. 

Kruglov was charged in October 2025 with intentionally spreading lies about the Russian military. Kruglov was charged over the content of two posts he made on the Telegram social network in 2022.

Maxim Kruglov says he is not guilty of the charge, for which he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.  

State investigators said the posts included false information about alleged actions by the Russian military against Ukrainian civilians.

Yabloko, which has only a handful of seats in regional parliaments and no seats in the national parliament, condemned President Vladimir Putin's decision to send tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and called on him to change course.
