Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei will not attend the funeral ceremonies of his father, former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, due to serious concerns for his safety, following threats from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz that he is "targeted for death."
The news was announced by the representative of the Supreme Leader of Iran in India, Ayatollah Hakim Elahi, in an interview with the India Today television network. According to him, the decision is related to Israel's continued threats against Iran's political and religious leadership.
Elahi stated that current security conditions do not allow Mojtaba Khamenei to attend the funeral ceremonies, as he continues to be considered a potential target.
The statements come after recent comments by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who had warned that Khamenei is "targeted to be killed."
These statements provoked strong reactions from Tehran, with the Iranian Foreign Minister warning that any future threats would receive a "strong response." /CNA
