Extreme heat wave in Spain/ Over 1,000 deaths recorded

More than 1,000 people have died from extreme temperature-related causes during Spain's latest heatwave, with the country recording the first half of 2026 as its hottest since official records began.

According to a report by the Carlos III Health Institute, at least 1,028 heat-related deaths were recorded during the month of June, more than double the 407 cases reported in June 2025.

The peak of the heat wave was marked on June 23, when around 35.7 million inhabitants, or approximately 73% of Spain's population, were exposed to high health risks.

Spain's National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) announced that June this year was the second hottest month ever recorded in the country, with average temperatures 3.2 degrees Celsius above the seasonal normal.

The latest heatwave has engulfed much of Europe and is considered one of the worst ever recorded. Temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in some places, breaking records in France, Germany and other European countries.

Historic temperature records were also recorded in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, while France experienced its highest nighttime temperatures ever recorded.

Meteorologists explain that the heat wave is being caused by a mass of very hot air moving from the Sahara Desert towards Europe, fed by a powerful high-pressure system, known as the "African anticyclone."

This phenomenon has created a so-called "heat dome", which traps hot air over Western and Central Europe, causing temperatures to rise day by day.

Experts point out that climate change caused by human activity has intensified this heat wave, making it up to 4 degrees Celsius hotter than it would be under normal conditions. /CNA
