Mexico's victory over Ecuador/ Celebrations turn into tragedy, 3 fans lose

Three people have died from asphyxiation as thousands of fans gathered in the streets of Mexico City to celebrate the Mexican national team's victory in the World Cup.

According to the health authorities of the Mexican capital, the incident occurred near the famous "Angel of Independence" monument, where thousands of fans celebrated Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador, a victory that secured the team's qualification to the round of 16.

Emergency crews responded to several locations along Paseo de la Reforma boulevard, where they found three people unconscious. A 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were initially confirmed dead from asphyxiation. Authorities later announced the death of a 48-year-old woman who was taken to the hospital after suffering asphyxiation but did not survive.

The Mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, expressed her condolences to the families of the victims through a post on the "X" platform, calling on citizens to always celebrate with responsibility, care and respect for others.

Thousands of Mexicans took to the streets to celebrate the national team's historic victory, which ended a 40-year wait for success in the knockout stages of the World Cup. However, the festive atmosphere was overshadowed by tragedy, as images of rescue workers helping people who had fallen on the streets near the celebration area were posted on social media.

Mexico City, one of the world's most populous metropolitan areas with over 20 million residents, is accustomed to mass gatherings, but this tragic event has raised concerns about safety during large public celebrations. /CNA
