Devastating earthquakes in Venezuela / Death toll rises to 1,700

The twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last Wednesday have killed at least 1,700 people. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez has called the situation "the most brutal natural disaster" in the country's history. Next to the collapsed structures, families wait in anxiety.

Residents report that the official intervention was slow and overdue. In the first hours after the tragedy, it was the citizens themselves who intervened with their bare hands to pull out the injured.

The first official team, made up of Venezuelan firefighters, arrived only on Friday, almost two days after the main strike. The help has also been joined by forces from Colombia, El Salvador and the United States, equipped with heavy machinery and cranes.

While operations focused on several well-known state complexes such as "Bello Horizonte", entire areas of the state of La Guaira remained shrouded in silence and the absence of search teams.

Despite the extraction of several survivors and desperate cries from under the rubble, the rescue operation in the main areas was officially closed on Sunday.

Residents and witnesses estimate that hundreds of bodies may still be trapped under the concrete rubble, making it impossible to determine the true extent of this disaster. /CNA
