Apocalyptic earthquakes in Venezuela/ Pope Leo XIV prays for the victims

Pope Leo XIV today expressed his solidarity with the people of Venezuela, who are struggling to cope with the devastating impact of two consecutive earthquakes that struck the country earlier this week.

"I want to express my closeness to the sisters and brothers in Venezuela who have been affected by the recent earthquakes, which have caused many victims and injuries," the Pope said, speaking in Spanish.

The Pope also expressed his gratitude to rescuers and all those helping Venezuelan citizens after the earthquakes.

Before being elected Pope, Leo spent decades as a missionary and bishop in Peru, a Spanish-speaking country, and is now planning a major tour of southern Latin America in November that will include Peru, Argentina and Uruguay./CNA
