The fishing sector has recorded a worrying performance during 2025, reflecting a significant decline in total production. According to INSTAT data, the amount of fish caught from all aquatic categories reached 15,153 tons, marking a decrease of 7.9% compared to 2024, when production was 16,452 tons.
This decline is spread across several main sectors, with aquaculture, which accounts for 43.2% of the catch structure, experiencing a contraction of 8.6% to 6,549 tonnes. Coastal fishing also recorded a decline of 12.1%, while lagoon fishing reported a decrease of 8.2% compared to 2024. In contrast, the shellfish sector showed a completely different performance, with a significant increase of 158.2%.
Another paradox is observed in fleet management, as despite the decline in production, the number of entities licensed for fishing has increased. In 2025, 854 entities were licensed, or 21 more than in 2024, with the fleet mainly concentrated in the ports of Durrës and Vlora./ CNA
