Agricultural production crisis/Challenges and uncertainties in key sectors

The agricultural sector faced a very challenging year in 2025, reflecting a fluctuating performance with significant declines in some of the most important crops for the economy and food security.

The crisis is evident in the production of cereals and tubers, where according to data published by INSTAT, wheat production has marked a decline of 10.1%, while potato production has shrunk by 7.2% compared to a year earlier.

The situation is even more worrying in the fruit sector, which has recorded the deepest decline, with a 12.8% decrease in total production.

Strategic sectors such as greenhouse production and olives have also suffered declines, by 0.9% and 2.3% respectively compared to 2024. Furthermore, the dried vegetables category has also recorded a 6.7% decline in its production.

This negative balance for the past year, despite isolated increases in sectors such as barley, medicinal plants and melons, raises questions about the long-term sustainability of these crops and the need for more efficient interventions to support local producers in the face of the challenges they face every day./ CNA
