Devastating earthquakes in Venezuela / 235 reported dead, thousands injured

At least 235 people have been killed and more than 4,300 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela near the capital Caracas. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors in the rubble, with authorities warning the death toll could rise.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 was followed just seconds later by another with a magnitude of 7.5.

Authorities report that around 250 buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed, while many residents have been left homeless and are spending the night on the streets for fear of further collapses.

President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency, while emergency teams continue to search the most affected areas. Aftershocks have continued after the main earthquakes, with over 30 aftershocks recorded.

Meanwhile, several countries have offered aid to Venezuela. The United States has pledged $150 million in humanitarian aid and has dispatched ships, planes and specialized teams for search and rescue operations. The Dominican Republic, Mexico, El Salvador and Qatar have also offered support.

USGS experts warn that the death toll could rise significantly, while a full assessment of the damage remains difficult due to power and communications outages in many areas of the country./ CNA
