Iran warns ships in Strait of Hormuz: Illegal passage will face measures

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has warned all ships in the Strait of Hormuz not to attempt to pass through it without Tehran's authorization. According to the statement, any ship that does not comply with this order will face "harsh measures".

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategic sea lanes for international trade and oil transportation, has become a flashpoint in negotiations between the United States and Iran. Tehran has restricted traffic through the waterway since the outbreak of war on February 28.

Iranian authorities are considering imposing tariffs on ships passing through the strait, a practice that did not exist before the war. The US opposes the idea, arguing that Hormuz is an international sea route, even though its waters are bordered by the Iranian and Omani coasts.

The Revolutionary Guards' statement states that "the only authorized route for passage through the Strait of Hormuz is the one announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran ." According to them, any unauthorized passage is considered "unacceptable and dangerous."

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea corridor, about 30 kilometers long, that separates Iran from Oman. Currently, Iran only allows passage through a designated corridor near its coast.

Meanwhile, the protocol of the agreement signed between Tehran and Washington to end the war stipulates that commercial ships can pass through the strait free of charge for a period of 60 days. The document also states that Iran will take measures to ensure the safety of navigation in this sea route.

On Tuesday, Iran and Oman announced that they would review the possible amount of fees that could be applied for services related to the management of the strait. On the other hand, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington will not accept the imposition of taxes or fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. /CNA
