Turkey arrests over 200 people ahead of NATO summit

Turkish police said on Tuesday they had arrested more than 200 people suspected of links to the militant group Islamic State and banned far-left groups.

The operation took place on the eve of the NATO summit, which will be held on July 7 and 8 in Ankara.

The Ankara Prosecutor's Office said 209 people have been detained in the capital, while 32 others remain at large.

Of those detained, 185 are suspected of membership in several extreme left-wing organizations, designated as terrorists by Ankara.

Among them is the Revolutionary People's Liberation Front-Party (DHKP-C), which has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Turkey in the past.

Authorities said the operations targeted several groups as part of broader security measures.

The Ankara Governor's Office announced late Monday a ban on all protests from June 28 until the end of the NATO summit.

The summit is expected to bring together the leaders of 32 member states, including US President Donald Trump.

It will take place at a critical moment for European and Euro-Atlantic security.

In recent months, the Alliance has come under pressure - also due to changes in US policy, which go beyond demands to strengthen NATO's European pillar.

The summit's priorities are expected to include: defense and deterrence planning; defense spending targets and burden-sharing among allies; further support for Ukraine, including equipment delivery, financing mechanisms and long-term strengthening of resilience, as well as the future direction of the Alliance.

Last week, the defense ministers of the member states held their final meeting before the summit in Ankara.

Secretary-General Mark Rutte said they had made "good progress" on NATO's priorities.

"Let's spend more and better on the forces and capabilities we need to protect every inch of Alliance territory. Today at the table I heard allies, one after another, explaining how they are increasing their defense investments," he said.

The Secretary-General also stressed the importance of European allies and Canada taking more responsibility for their own defense, backed by American power./REL
